King splits midweek doubleheader with Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The King University softball team split their Conference Carolinas doubleheader Wednesday, falling to rival Lees-McRae 8-0 in six innings before rebounding to win a 7-0 decision in the final game of the day.

KING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Carly Turner went 3-for-7 at the plate, with a home run and a pair of RBI. She also got the start in the circle in game two, throwing a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts.
  • Camryn Haag was 2-for-6, with one of her hits being a home run. She also drove in a pair and drew a walk.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • After both teams left runners on base in the first, it was the Bobcats who struck in the second, scoring two runs, one of which came on an error by the first baseman and one that came off a passed ball, putting Lees-McRae up 2-0.
  • In the fourth, the Bobcats added three runs, including a two-RBI single from Megan Powell that made the score 5-0.
  • Lees-McRae would add two runs in the fifth on a two-RBI double, before the finishing touch, a double in the sixth that scored the game-winning run.
  • King only managed two hits on the day, a single in the first by Carly Turner and a double in the fourth from Rikkelle Miller.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The second game is where the King offense came alive, starting right away in the top of the first, where they scored three quick runs.
  • Each of the first three King batters reached base, two of which were singles into center field, including an RBI single from Turner that allowed Erin Foster to score.
  • Tinsley Thompson and Miller would team up to execute a double steal, grabbing another run for the Tornado.
  • Camryn Haag delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Miller to boost the lead to 3-0.
  • In the third, Lauren Lawson delivered an RBI single, scoring Lilly Million and advancing Haag to third.
  • She would score on a passed ball, making it a 5-0 lead for the Tornado.
  • Turner stepped up to the plate with one out in the fourth and delivered her 10th home run of the season, this one to left-center field to put King up 6-0.
  • After loading the bases in the fifth, the Tornado polished things off in the top of the sixth, when Haag hit a home run of her own, giving the Tornado a 7-0 lead that would end up being insurmountable.
  • In addition to her performance at the plate, Turner also threw a gem in the pitching circle, throwing the full seven innings, scattering a pair of hits and recording nine strikeouts.

  • Aliyah Campbell went 3-for-6 at the plate for the Bobcats.
  • Rylie Webster, Julie Gast and Powell all recorded multiple RBI on the day.
  • Powell, who was the starting pitcher in game one, threw 9.2 innings on the day, allowing two earned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts.
