King drops Conference Carolinas match to Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In a matchup of two of the top teams in the Conference Carolinas West Division, the King University women's volleyball team fell to Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon. The Lions used runs late in the second and third sets to take the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Emmanuel used three straight points to open up a 5-2 advantage in the early going.
  • King tried to fight back and pulled within in 14-13 on a block from Kara Miller and Katie Harless.
  • King pulled within one point one more time, but the Lions pulled away to take the opening set 25-18.
Second Set
  • The Tornado held the advantage early in the second set and took a 10-8 lead following a block from Abigail Belcher and Harless.
  • However, Emmanuel scored three straight points to take the lead.
  • King held a two-point advantage down the stretch, but Emmanuel used another 3-0 run to take a 22-21 lead and force a King timeout.
  • King fought off two set points for Emmanuel as Paula La Mendola evened the score at 24 with an ace.
  • A Hailee Blankenship kill knotted the tally at 25, but the Lions scored the final two points to take the set 27-25
Third Set
  • A Miller kill sparked a 5-0 King run that vaulted the Tornado to an 11-10 lead.
  • Belcher and Harless had a block on the run before a Gabri Puertas ace and another block from Belcher and Abigale Jayne to give King the lead.
  • King later took a 20-17 lead before the Lions closed the set on a run.
  • Emmanuel scored eight of the final 11 points, including a 3-0 run to take a 24-22 lead.
  • Following a King point and timeout, the Lions came up with a kill to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jayne led the Tornado with 10 kills while Blankenship followed with nine kills.
  • Puertas led the back row with 15 digs while Jersey Wines added 12 digs.
  • Katie Harless posted 22 assists.
FOR THE FOES
  • Emily Hanson led Emmanuel with 12 kills while Taylor Roberts and Alaina Emminger chipped in with 10 kills each.
  • Gabrielle McGlamery handed out 39 assists and a team-high 18 digs.
  • Asia Queen added 15 digs while Layla Bland and Kaitlyn Henderson added 12 digs each.
UP NEXT
  • King returns to action on Tuesday when they host rival Lees-McRae College at 7:00 p.m.
  • Emmanuel hosts Erskine College on Tuesday night.
