King falls to Queens

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University men's volleyball team returned home and fell to Queens University on Wednesday night. The match was tight, but the Royals used runs at the end of each set to take the match 3-0.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Queens 3, King 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22)
LOCATION: Student Center Complex; Bristol, Tenn.
RECORDS: King 7-7; Queens 9-9

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • King jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind a pair of kills and an ace from Joshua Kim and a kill from Kellan Kennedy.
  • However, Queens responded with a 10-3 run to open up an 11-7 lead.
  • The Tornado worked their way back, evening the set at 14 on a Constan Tolentino kill as the teams then went back-and-forth.
  • Kills from Kim gave King 20-19, 21-20 and 22-21 leads, but the Queens closed the set on a run.
  • The Royals scored the final four points to take the set 25-22.
Second Set
  • The Tornado again got off to a hot start, taking a 4-0 lead.
  • However, Queens again answered, scoring seven of the next eight points to take the lead.
  • Four more Royal points gave Queens an 11-6 lead.
  • King tried to comeback, but couldn't get any closer than three points as Queens took the set 25-19.
Third Set
  • The Tornado used a 4-0 run, capped by a Jackson Carroll kill to take an early 7-4 lead in the third set.
  • King extended their lead to five points following back-to-back kills from Tolentino and Carroll.
  • An Aaron Milstead kill then gave King a 16-11 lead before Queens started to work their way back.
  • Queens came back and evened the tally at 18, but King still had the advantage as the teams traded side outs.
  • Consecutive Royal points gave queens a 22-21 lead, but AJ Drooker and Carroll responded with kills to vault King to a 23-22 lead.
  • Nevertheless, Queens scored the final three points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kim led the Tornado with 16 kills and eight digs while Tolentino followed with six kills and nine digs.
  • Drooker handed out 28 assists and Noah Melendez registered a team-high 10 digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Josh Bragg led Queens with 11 kills and 12 digs.
  • Stirling Sims followed with eight kills.
  • Daniel Leitao handed out 30 assists and added six digs while Ruben Greenstein added nine digs.
UP NEXT
  • King is in action again on Friday at Belmont Abbey College. First serve from Belmont, N.C. is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
  • Queens hosts Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday.
