Well-rounded effort leads King past SWU

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's basketball team put together another solid effort on Saturday, leading to their second win over Southern Wesleyan University in as many days. Ryleigh Fritz paced four Tornado scorers in double figures with 20 points as the Tornado took the Conference Carolinas contest 87-42.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
  • A Desiree Bates layup gave King an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter and later Julie Ford gave King a 12-4 lead before the Warriors came back.
  • Southern Wesleyan scored eight straight points to even the score, but Ali Golden beat the first quarter buzzer to give King a 14-12 lead going to the second period.
Second Period
  • The Tornado gained separation in the second quarter with a 7-0 run started by a Jhayda McKinney three-point basket. A pair of Kiki Samsel free throws gave King a 29-18 lead with four minutes remaining until halftime.
  • McKinney connected on another from long range that gave King their largest lead of the half at 37-22.
  • Fritz capped the first half scoring with a three-point basket, giving King a 41-27 lead at the break.
Third Period
  • The King defense clamped down in the second half, allowing the Warriors to score nine points in the third quarter and six in the fourth.
  • On the other end of the floor, the Tornado advantage grew to 58-34 late in the third quarter.
  • King held a 58-36 lead going to the fourth period.
Fourth Period
  • Fritz started the final period with back-to-back three-point baskets that started a 16-0 Tornado run.
  • Madee Denton gave King a 74-36 lead with a layup midway through the quarter to cape the Tornado spurt.
  • Beth Clark made a three-point basket late in the period, making the final score 87-42 in favor of the Tornado.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Fritz led the way with a season-high 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting from three-point range.
  • McKinney followed with 12 points, going 4-for-6 from long range.
  • Golden added 11 points and Samsel chipped in with 10 points and five steals.
  • Ford snared nine rebounds and Brianna Dunbar handed out a game-high nine assists to go along with six points.
FOR THE FOES
  • Brooke Henricks led the way for the Warriors with 11 points and four rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The nine assists for Dunbar mark a career-high.
  • Fritz was within one of her career-high of 21 points.
UP NEXT
  • King takes to the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when they travel to Erskine College. Tipoff from Due West, S.C. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
  • Southern Wesleyan hosts Bluefield State College on Wednesday night.
