Tornado split Friday doubleheader with SWU

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team traveled to take on Southern Wesleyan University Friday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader matchup. The Warriors took game one 8-4, but the Tornado bats got going in game two as they recorded 14 hits and King rally to take the second contest 11-3.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tony Valdes led the Tornado offense recording three hits on the day including one home run to increase his season total to four. He knocked in three runs and scored four runs on the day.
  • On the mound, Octavio Mirabal pitched the game two win for the Tornado to improve to 5-1 on the season. Mirabal tossed eight strikeouts while giving up only three hits in 5.0 innings pitched.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado fell behind early as the Warriors put up two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • King struggled at the plate, not recording a single hit until the sixth inning. In the sixth, a Mark Michael double was followed by a Valdes single to bring Michael home. The run was one of three in the inning for the Tornado to tie up the contest 3-3.
  • After mowing down the side in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tornado scored another run in the top of the seventh following a Cam Haymans solo shot to center field to give King a 4-3 lead.
  • However, the Warriors responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead over King.
  • The Tornado could not get the bats going late and Southern Wesleyan managed to score three more runs in the eighth inning to finish off King 8-4.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Valdes got the Tornado rolling in game two with a home run hit to right center in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, King's bats heated up as they posted three runs and recorded four hits in the inning. This included a J.P. Castaneda double that brought Haymans home to give the Tornado a 4-0 lead.
  • King posted three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to give the Tornado a 7-0 advantage over the Warriors. Bailey posted a double that brought in a run during the inning for King.
  • Southern Wesleyan would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Tornado lead to 7-1.
  • However, a monster sixth inning extended the Tornado lead to 11-1. Valdes roped a double down the left field line to bring Castaneda home during the inning. Valdes's hit was one of five Tornado hits in the inning.
  • The Warriors would score two runs late in the seventh inning, however, King went on to take the contest 11-3.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jesse Getford posted three hits and knocked home four runs on the Warriors on the day.
  • Mike Batten pitched a complete game in game one for Southern Wesleyan to register the win. He gave up only four hits and struck out 10 in the contest.

UP NEXT

  • King and Southern Wesleyan will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 pm in a single, nine inning game.
