Boyd, Mirabal lead Tornado to senior weekend sweep

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team hosted Limestone College Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader matchup. On Senior Day, the Tornado were led by two senior pitchers, Octavio Mirabal and Grant Boyd, who propelled King to a huge weekend sweep of the Limestone Saints.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Grant Boyd and Octavio Mirabal led the Tornado with huge performances on the mound.
  • Mirabal threw game one of the doubleheader and gave up only four hits and struck out six in route to pitching a complete game and getting the game one victory.
  • Boyd pitched a complete game in game two as he threw 154 pitches over nine innings and struck out 10 batters to cap off the three game sweep of Limestone.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado wasted no time in putting runs on the board in game one as they recorded two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 over Limestone early.
  • The two first inning runs came after J.P. Castaneda ripped a triple that brought two home to give the Tornado their lead.
  • Limestone got one of the runs back in the top of the second however, to cut the Tornado lead to 2-1.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, the Saints tied up the contest 2-2 following a Chase Allen solo home run.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third Bubba Ruiz singled out to right center to bring home both runners and give the Tornado a 4-2 lead.
  • Mirabal and the Tornado defense shut down the Saints offense in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 victory over Limestone.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Saints struck first in game two by scoring one run in the top of the first inning. However, the Tornado responded and scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.
  • In the first inning, Mark Michael doubled and Tyler Bailey recorded a walk to give Kevin Barbato runners on first and second with one out. Barbato proceeded to rip a double down the right field line that scored both runners.
  • Later in the inning, Castaneda singled up the middle to bring in another run for the Tornado and give King a 3-1 lead.
  • The Saints scored a run in the fourth inning to cut the Tornado lead to 3-2. However, King added another run in the fifth inning to take a 4-2.
  • Boyd and the Tornado defense controlled the remaining four innings as they held the Saints scoreless and defeated Limestone 4-2 to cap off the weekend sweep.

FOR THE FOES

  • Zach Piazza posted four hits on the day to lead the Saints.
  • Chase Allen hit his 16th home run of the season in game one of the doubleheader.

  • Limestone travels to Wingate University Tuesday, April 3.
