Whitt's four home runs not enough for King to top UMO

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team tried to bounce back after dropping game one of their Conference Carolinas series with the University of Mount Olive. The Trojans came back to take game one of Saturday's doubleheader 6-3 before winning the nightcap 12-6.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ryan Whitt paced the Tornado offense, hitting four home runs on the day, including three in game two. He also drove in six runs on the day, and went 4-for-4 in the nightcap.
  • Austin Dayton drove in a pair in the nightcap for the Tornado.
  • Ryan Sattz posted three hits on the day, including two in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Stephen Wallace gave Mount Olive the early lead with a home run to start the second inning.
  • However, the Tornado came right back to take the lead in the top of the third. J.P. Castaneda started the inning with a walk and later scored on a Mark Hencken double to left center. Whitt then followed with a home run, giving King a 3-1 lead.
  • The Trojans answered to even the tally in the bottom of the inning, however. David Mayo came up with the big hit, a two-run home run with two outs.
  • Mount Olive regained the lead in the fifth inning when they had runners on second and third with no outs. Ricky Surum dropped down a squeeze bunt to score one and Brett Lang later ripped a two-run single through the left side to give Mount Olive the 6-3 lead.
  • That was all starting pitcher Bruce Zimmerman needed as he only allowed one Tornado base runner over the final two innings, giving the Trojans the 6-3 win.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Trojans again grabbed the lead early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Lang and Wallace both drove in runs with doubles, giving Mount Olive a 2-0 advantage.
  • Mount Olive made it a 6-0 lead when they plated four runs in the third inning. Brandon Day had the big hit of the inning, a three-run double to right center field.
  • King got on the board in the top of the fourth as Whitt started the inning with a home run. Later in the frame, Dayton drove in two, cutting the King deficit to 6-3.
  • However, the Trojans turned a double play to end the top of the fourth, and used that momentum in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs. Wallace drove in two with a triple to highlight the inning that gave Mount Olive an 11-3 advantage.
  • Whitt struck again in the fifth with another solo home run to cut into the Mount Olive lead.
  • Orrison drove in one in the sixth to give Mount Olive a 12-4 lead.
  • In the eighth, Castaneda drew a leadoff walk, and following a pair of outs, Whitt laced his third home run of the day, making the score 12-6.
  • Mount Olive threatened in the eighth, leaving the bases loaded before the Trojans worked a clean ninth to take the game 12-6.

FOR THE FOES

  • Lang drove in three runs on the day, two in game one before he went 3-for-5 in the nightcap.
  • Day drove in four, going 4-for-5 in game two.
  • Also in game two, Wallace posted three runs batted in while going 2-for-3 and scoring twice.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado return home on Tuesday to face Carson-Newman University. First pitch is scheduled for April 12.
  • Mount Olive next hosts Virginia State University on Tuesday.
