Tornado sweep DH, take series from Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Tornaod took the King Baseball Field for day two of a Conference Carolinas series in a double-header against Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon. After falling on day one of the series the Tornado bounced back with two wins, stealing the series from the Lions. The Tornado defense helped lift them past the Lions only allowing six runs between the two games, which in turn sparked the Tornado momentum from the plate to take the back-to-back victories.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mark Hendricks tallied the win pitching all seven innings in game one of the twin-bill, giving up only two runs and six hits in the game.
  • Preston Douglas recorded five hits for the day including a triple and a double, accounted for six King runs, and batted in two.
  • Also posting five hits was Ryan Sattz, including a grand slam in game two, where he also drove in eight runs for the game.
  • In game one, Mark Hencken drove in three runs and tallied his third home run of the season. He recorded four hits in the day.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Lions jumped of the board first scoring one run on two hits before the Tornado ended the inning turning a double play.
  • The Tornado got hot in the third inning fueled by a Hencken home run, that was crushed over center field, with Douglas and Joe Ganger on base who had earlier singled.
  • Sattz tacked on another with a single through the left side that scored Ryan Whitt who was earlier walked to give King a 4-1 lead.
  • Emmanuel grabbed a run in the fourth on one hit after a batter was walked with the bases loaded and Hendricks would not allow the Lions more than a hit for each of the remaining innings.
  • Feeding off momentum from the previous inning the Tornado chipped in three more led by Douglas who tripled to right center scoring Ganger, Whitt then drove Douglas in with a single to left field, and Sattz did the same scoring Whitt, now up 7-2 after four.
  • Austin Dayton drove in another run  for King in the fifth a scoring Stephens who was earlier walked.
  • Closing out game one Sattz drove in Whitt in the sixth to add another run giving King their 9-2 advantage through six.
  • Hendricks sealed the deal with a quick three-up-three-down for his defense to take the 9-2 victory.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Emmanuel's leadoff batter Brandon Bostick laid down a triple down the right field line and then scored as the next batter grounded out to short stop taking the early 1-0 advantage.
  • The Emmanuel advantage was short lived as Whitt answered back with a triple to right center that scored Douglas who had earlier singled. Sattz then sent in Whitt with a single up the middle, up 2-1 in through one.
  • Fueling a seven run inning for the Tornado Douglas doubled to right field scoring Dayton who earlier singled and advanced to second on a Ganger sacrifice bunt.
  • With the bases load in the second Sattz ripped on over the left field fence for the grand slam and then King added a couple more when Dylan Sligh scored on an error by the catcher and Anthony Hunt drove in Josh Stephens giving King the 9-1 advantage after two.
  • In the third inning recording four hits the Tornado tacked on another four runs to go up 13-1, with Sattz driving in one as he grounded out, Hunt with two more singling up the middle, and another as Dayton singled to center field.
  • Emmanuel then tallied three runs on three hits in the fourth closing in on the King lead down 13-4 through four and the Tornado woudl not allow another run after the inning.
  • Sattz drove in two more for the Tornado in the fourth off a single to right center that scored Hencken and Douglas.
  • In the bottom of the seventh Braden Cook doubled down the left field line scoring J.P. Castaneda and Hunt, and Ben Donaldson then scored on a fielding error by the left fielder giving King what would be their 18-4 win.

FOR THE FOES

  • Centerfielder Bostick led the Lions with four hits, including a triple.
  • Stephen Skeggs drove in two of the Emmanuel runs, also posting a double.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado travel to Carson-Newman University April 5th for a non-conference make-up game from February 16th, scheduled for first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
  • Emmanuel travels to take on Lander on Tuesday.
