Late runs lead LMU past King

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The King University softball team returned to the diamond on Wednesday when they traveled to take on Lincoln Memorial University. The Railsplitters pulled away late in both games, taking game one 4-1 and game two 11-8.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hannah Devotie went 3-for-4 to pace the King offense in the opening game.
  • In game two, Hayley Smothers went 4-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.
  • Alliyah Sands posted three hits in four at bats in the night cap, driving in a pair and scoring twice.
  • Diamond Callwood, Morgan Lowe, Hannah Smith and Kaycee Casteel all registered two hits in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • King looked to get the offense going early in game one as Devotie singled to start the contest. However, the Railsplitters ended the threat with a double play.
  • Lincoln Memorial threatened with a pair of base runners in the second inning, but Smothers got out of the inning unscathed.
  • Lindsay Cecil started the third inning with a single and was sacrificed to second before scoring on a BriAnna Schrimpf double, giving the Railsplitters a 1-0 lead.
  • Lincoln Memorial tacked on another run in the fourth inning on an Ashlea Hunter infield single.
  • In the fifth inning, Schrimpf laced a two-run home run, giving the Railsplitters a 4-0 lead.
  • King started a rally in the sixth inning, started by a fielding error. An infield single and walk loaded the bases before Hannah Smith drove in one with a groundout.
  • That was all King could push across as Lincoln Memorial pitcher Brianna Taylor got the final two outs, leaving the bases loaded.
  • The Tornado mounted another rally in the seventh inning with one out. A walk and back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases with one out.
  • The Railsplitters made a timely pitching change, bringing in Samantha Smith who got the final two outs, giving Lincoln Memorial the victory.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado grabbed the lead with an unearned run in the first inning, but the advantage was short lived.
  • The Railsplitters evened the score with a single from Schrimpf and took the lead on a Becca Burchette sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
  • King regained the lead when they belted out six hits in the third inning. The Tornado loaded the bases with no outs when Sands laced a two-run double, putting King on top.
  • The bases were again loaded and King scored one on an Amber Walker single and another on an error. Kaycee Castell made it a five run inning for King with a double down the left field line, giving the Tornado a 6-2 advantage.
  • The Railplistters answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, however. Schrimpf drove in one with a groundout, another scored on a double and another on a sacrifice fly, making the score 6-5 after three.
  • Morgan Lowe doubled to score Sands in the fourth, and Lowe later scored on a Smothers single, stretching the King lead back to 8-5.
  • Lincoln Memorial came right back again, plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Railsplitters scored a pair on an Allie Jones double before getting run scoring hits from Schripmf and Jennifer Moose to take the lead.
  • The Railplitters added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting an RBI double from Meredith Johnson and run scoring groundout from Hunter to take an 11-8 lead into the seventh.
  • King got their first two runners on in the seventh, but a double play ended the threat as the Railplitters took the contest 11-8.

FOR THE FOES

  • Schrimpf collected four hits in the doubleheader, driving six runs and scoring three times to lead Lincoln Memorial.
  • Moose also recorded four hits and drove in a pair.
  • Johnson and Jones both drove in two runs in game two.

UP NEXT

  • King stays on the road to take on UVa-Wise on Thursday. First pitch from Wise, Va. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
  • Lincoln Memorial will be in action again on Saturday at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament where they will face Ohio Valley and Bowie State.
