King takes series from Limestone, splits DH

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team had a chance to take their first Conference Carolinas series sweep of the season when they took on Limestone College in a doubleheader on Saturday. It looked as though the Tornado would take that sweep, winning game one 14-1 behind a 19-hit performance. In game two, the Saints had the upper hand before King got back within one in the eighth inning, and the Tornado had the tying run on third base in the ninth, but couldn't get a hit as the Saints took the game 7-6.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ryan Whitt had a big day at the play, recording five hits on the day. In game one he went 3-for-4 and drove in five, including his third home run of the season.
  • Also recording five hits on the day was Ryan Sattz who went 4-for-4 in game one where he scored twice and drove in one.
  • Nicolas Keister scored twice and drove in two, going 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot in game on for the Tornado.
  • In game two, Mark Hencken drove in three with a double while Joe Ganger and Tyler Bailey recorded two hits apiece.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hencken reached on a wild pitch in the first inning, and later scored on a Whitt single through the left side, giving King a 1-0 lead after one.
  • The Tornado broke the game open in the second inning, recording six runs on eight hits. Sattz, Ganger, Keister, Whitt, Dylan Sligh and Austin Dayton all drove in runs for the Tornado in the inning, giving King a 7-0 lead.
  • Limestone got on the board with one run in the third inning, but King answered with a pair in the botoom half. Keister drove in one with a single up the middle, and later scored on a passed ball to give King a 9-1 lead.
  • Preston Douglas and Bailey registered run scoring singles in the fifth, stretching the King lead to 11-1.
  • Whitt iced the game in the sixth inning when he laced a three-run home run down the left field line.
  • On the mount, Mark Hendricks tossed his first complete game of the season, allowing five hits in seven innings as King took the game 14-1.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the nightcap it was Limestone that struck first, scoring three runs on four hits in the third inning. The Saints got run scoring hits from Ian Hinson, Dillion Palencia and Garrett Lowery.
  • Sligh got King on the board with a groundout that scored Hencken, cutting the Tornado deficit to 3-1 after three.
  • However, the Saints added two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Austin Marcellus and Caleb Bruce drove in runs with extra base hits in the fourth and Lowery and Brett Duckett plated both of the runs for Limestone in the fifth, giving the Saints a 7-1 lead.
  • King battled back in the eighth inning as Sligh started the frame with a double. Anthony Hunt and Bailey each drove in one before Hencken came up with the big hit for King. He ripped a double down the left field line that scored three, pulling King within 7-6 after eight.
  • A 1-2-3 inning brought the Tornado back to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, and Josh Stephens started a two-out rally with a walk. Bailey followed with a single before Sattz was walked intentionally to load the bases.
  • However, Saints pitcher Eric Mullinax got his third strikeout of the inning to give Limestone the 7-6 victory.

FOR THE FOES

  •  Lowery, Marcellus and Bruce all record two hits for Limestone in game two, with Lowery driving in a pair.
  • Marcellus and Lowery both posted three hits on the day.

UP NEXT

  • King stays at home to face Tusculum College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The Tornado dropped a 4-2 contest at Tusculum last week.
  • Limestone travels to take on Carson-Newman University on Tuesday.
