Big first half pushes King past Barton

WILSON, N.C. – A strong first half showing sent King University women's basketball past Barton College led by Amy Van Deventer posting a double-double. After entering halftime with an 18 point lead the Tornado coasted to a 73-47 victory on a cushion they had built early on.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams started out showing a strong defensive presence as there was a total of two points on the board at the first media timeout with King holding the 2-0 lead.
  • Coming out of the timeout King picked up their speed after going eight minutes without scoring a bucket as a Madison Davis jumper broke the silence with 2:53 left in the first quarter.
  • King then went on  to end the first quarter up 10-3 after a Whitney Mitchell lay-up with 0:07 left.
  • Brittany Stringer kicked off the second quarter for King draining a three-pointer and then a lay-up from Van Deventer gave King a 15-3 lead.
  • This then lead to a 14-0 spurt for King when Kristen Cupples sunk a three-pointer to go up 24-7
  • King continued their offensive fire as a Mitchell lay-up gave the Tornado their largest lead of the half up 29-7 with 3:08 on the clock.
  • The Tornado went on outscoring Barton 22-11 in the second quarter.
  • Building an 18 point cushion in the first half of play King went into the locker room up 32-14.
  • King's hard earned first half lead allowed them to cruise through the second half behind shooting 52.0 percent from the field
  • In the third quarter both teams exchanged buckets as King only tallied on one more point to their lead going in the fourth quarter up 49-30.
  • The Tornado continued to hold a double digit lead in the fourth quarter when at 1:47 they grabbed their largest lead off the game leading 67-42 after an Arnelle Collins lay-up.
  • King the closed out the game, taking the contest 73-47.
  • Van Deventer posted 18 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks to lead the Tornado.
  • Collins followed with 13 points while Mitchell and Davis added nine points.

FOR THE FOES

  • Karimah Dean posted a double-double for the bulldogs with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Caila Carter lead Barton with 12 points

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The double-double for Van Deventer was her third of the season and third in five games.

UP NEXT

  • King hosts the Belmont Abbey College on Thursday in the Student Center Complex in a makeup game from January 23. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
  • Barton travels to take on Converse College on Thursday evening.
