Block leads to Tornado win at Lees-McRae

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In search of their first win of the season, the King University men's volleyball team looked rested as they earned a sweep at Lees-McRae College on Wednesday evening. The Tornado took the first two sets, and scored the final five points of the third set, taking the sweep with a 26-24 third set victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lees-McRae broke a 6-6 tie in the first set with a 5-1 run, grabbing an early lead of 11-7.
  • Sean Luhmann and Adrian Besson teamed up for back-to-back kills later in the set, starting a 3-0 run that evened the tally at 14-14.
  • King scored consecutive points to gain separation later in the set, taking a 22-20 lead.
  • After the Bobcats got within one, Jeff Sprayberry gave King the first 25-23 with his third kill of the set.
  • The Tornado grabbed the early lead following back-to-back kills from Sprayberry and Luhmann in the second set.
  • King scored three straight points to take control of the set a 18-13 as they went on to take a 2-0 lead with the 25-18 victory.
  • King scored five straight points to erase a four-point deficit and take an 11-10 lead in the third set.
  • Lychock gave King an 18-15 lead with a kill before the Bobcats started to come back.
  • Lees-McRae scored five of the next six points, evening the frame at 20-20.
  • The Bobcats then broke a 21-21 tie with three straight points and give themselves three chances a set point.
  • However, Jon Wheaton started a run with a kill and Nathan Veli followed with an ace.
  • King evened the score before Sprayberry, Nick Drooker and Lychock teamed up for a block to give King the lead and force a Bobcat timeout.
  • Out of the break, Sprayberry and Lychock gave King the 26-24 victory with another block.
  • Lychock and Luhmann led the Tornado with nine kills each.
  • Lychock added a team-high six blocks while Besson and Wheaton added four stuffs each.
  • Drooker handed out 32 assists while Luhmann added a team-high seven digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Hector Serviat and John Sobel led the Bobcats with nine kills each.
  • Drew Blecher led Lees-McRae with 20 assists and Keenan Freitas posted nine digs.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Friday at Belmont Abbey College. The Tornado face St. Andrews University at 4:00 p.m. and Belmont Abbey at 7:00 p.m.
  • The Bobcats travel to Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
