Tornado open USC Aiken Invite with sweep of Fayetteville State

AIKEN, S.C. – The King University women's volleyball team opened play at the USC Aiken Invitational with an impressive win over Fayetteville State University on Friday afternoon. The Tornado swept the Broncos behind a balanced attack to start the weekend on the right foot.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King scored the first five points of the match, and didn't look back in the first set, taking the frame 25-9 behind four kills from Sarah Collins.
  • The Tornado trailed 24-23 late in the second set before scoring back-to-back points, the second on a kill from Collins to take the lead. Ashleigh Manke recorded consecutive kills to give King a chance a set point as King took the set 29-27.
  • The third set went back-and-forth as King took the early lead, but the Broncos came back to take a 15-14 lead before the Tornado rolled off five-of-six points to grab the lead en route to the 25-18 victory for the sweep.
  • Manke led King with nine kills while Collins followed with eight.
  • Casey Williams posted a team-high eight digs.
  • Setter Olivia Underwood dished out a match-high 34 assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jayde Jacobs led the Broncos with seven kills.
  • Jessica Hardy dished out 15 assists.
  • Brianna Kelly had eight digs to lead the defense.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The three set win marked King's first win a three set match this year.
  • The first set 25-9 victory marked the first time since last September King held their opponent to single digits in a set. The Tornado topped Pfeiffer 25-7 in the first set.
  • Manke led the team in kills, marking the third different player has led King in kills. Lauren Willoughby has led King three times, Collins and Manke once each.
