Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's soccer team hosted Erskine College in a Conference Carolinas affair. A game that was scoreless for most of it, changed when Chris Hicks delivered a goal in the 65th minute handing King a 1-0 win.
King (7-7, 5-3 CC) started fast when Chris Hicks delivered a shot at net that was saved by Fiore Costa just over a minute into the game. The first Erskine threat came in the 14th minute when Andrew Settlemire sent a header at net that was saved by the King keeper, Kari Svensson. The Flying Fleet keeper came up big again in the 20th minute when he made a great save on an Eli Carrasco shot.
Both teams would continue to trade possession and shots but the game remained scoreless going into the half. Both teams tallied six shots in the opening period in a pretty even contest.
To open the second half, shots were flying for both teams. First, Erskine (7-6-2, 3-3-2 CC) tallied two shots in the 51st minute, one blocked, the other sailing left of the net. In the 54th minute, Hallgrimur Johannsson sent a shot at net that was saved by the keeper.
The magic happened for King in the 65th minute. Hicks delivered for the Tornado of a ball that was bouncing around in the box making the score King 1, Erskine 0. The Flying Fleet pushed to even the game and in the 69th minute, Ross Henderson sent a header at net that was saved by Sveinsson. They would continue to threaten but nothing would result in what they had been looking for, a game tying goal.
When the final whistle blew, King had defeated Erskine 1-0 in an important conference game. Erskine outshot King 16-13 and tallied four corner kicks to the Tornado's two. Sveinsson tallied two saves in the win.
King will be on the road next when they travel to Lees-McRae on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
