BRISTOL, Tenn. - The King College women's volleyball team recently completed a two week mission trip to Brazil where outreach work, games against club teams and sightseeing occurred.
A group of 11 players went with head coach Chris Toomey, along with head athletic trainer Shelia Crockett and her husband Chris on the expedition.
While in Brazil, the squad worked in an orphanage, led an after school program in an underprivileged village, renovated a church nursery, and performed music, dramas and puppet shows in five churches.
King was able to compete against club teams in the area which also provided an outreach opportunity.
Also on the trip the crowd visited nearby Petropolis which is known as the Imperial City of Brazil along with other sightseeing adventures.
In addition the group worked with Igreja Viva Church which has a King graduate as pastor with Lucas Coelho at the helm. He graduated from King in 2003 where he was a member of the Tornado soccer team.
King opens the 2010 regular season at the Limestone (S.C.) College Tournament on Sept. 3. The home opener against Montreat (N.C.) College will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. The Lady Tornado posted a 29-12 record last season and reached the NCCAA National Tournament.
