MASON, Ohio - King College advanced in the 2010 NCCAA Division I Baseball World Series thanks to an 11-1 win over Judson (Ill.) University Thursday, but a 9-2 defeat against Colorado Christian University bounced the Tornado from the championship later in the day.
King, the No. 8 seed for the event, saw the 2010 season come to an end at 29-16. The Tornado finished in a tie for seventh at the series.
In the Judson game Zach Winkle (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the Judson first and then King scored six times in the top of the second and never looked back as the Tornado batted around during the inning. King used four hits and three Judson errors in the scores.
Winkle went onto throw his fifth complete game of 2010 as he improved to 5-5. He scattered three hits, walked five and struck out a pair. The three hits are the fewest he allowed in a start this season and the fifth time he gave up one run or had a shutout.
The Tornado tacked on four more runs in the third inning.
The only Judson run was via a bases loaded walk in the fourth. King answered with a run in the fifth which led to the 10-run advantage.
Ryan Kennedy (Elizabethton, Tenn.) had a perfect 3-for-3 game at the plate as he scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. It was his 16th multi-hit effort of the season. Danny Williamson (Middleburg, Fla.) collected two hits as well. John Jordan (Bristol, Tenn.) and Justin Reising (Jonesborough, Tenn.) were responsible for two RBIs apiece. Jordan also used his team-best seventh triple of the season for his two RBIs as he pushed his team-best hitting streak to 10 games.
Against Colorado Christian Kennedy scored King's first two runs, in the first and third innings. He singled in the first and was on second after a throwing error. A bunt single by C.J. Stabler (Kingsport, Tenn.) with another throwing error allowed Kennedy to give King a 1-0 lead. Kennedy reached with another error in the third and Stabler lined a double to center for King's second run.
In between King's scoring innings Colorado Christian sent 10 batters to the plate in the second and seven Cougars scored. Four of the runs were on Doug Pavlich's grand slam homer to left. Colorado Christian added a third inning run. Pavlich went onto finish 2-for-4 with five RBIs. J.L. Buchanan was 3-for-3.
Stabler and Steven Mueller (Mt. Washington, Ky.) had 2-for-3 efforts at the plate. The other King hit came on Kennedy's first inning single.
Wesley Houser (Knoxville, Tenn.) went three innings and gave up eight earned runs on eight hits.
Aaron Orr used a complete game for Colorado Christian. Both runs he allowed were unearned and he mixed in five strikeouts.
