The King College men's golf team will open it's 2009 fall season with a trip to Chardon, OH to play in Telich/Sunlife Invitational hosted by Cleveland State University. This will be a big challenge to starrt the season as this will be the first time King has ever played in an NCAA Division I event.
The Tornados are led this season by Nick Carden and Josh Bamberger. Both of them are sophomores and will look to build on the success they had as freshman, Josh Bamberger captured player of the year honors last year as a freshman in the AAC (Applacian Athletic Conference). He won 1 event and had 4 top 5 finishes last season. Nick Carden is coming off a wonderful spring and summer where he qualified for both the Tennessee State Open and Tennessee Amateur. He had 2 top 5 finishes for King last Spring.
They will be joined for the first event by all three of Coach Nelson's freshman. Blake Davidson, from Hixson, TN, Richard Powell, from Hixson, TN and Matt Love, from Johnson City, TN will all make they college debuts this week.
They will compete at The Telich/Sunlife Invitational hosted by Cleveland State on September 28-29 at the 7215-yard, par 72 Sand Ridge Golf Course in Chardon, OH. The course is ranked annually in the Top 100 in the country by Golf Digest and used to be where Coach Nelson worked as an Assistant Golf Professional. "The young men are in for a real treat to start our season this year. We will be playing a wonderful golf course against competition better then we are used to playing against. We have a much different team though this year and I think it will give us a good evaluation of where we are" said Coach Nelson.
This year's 12-team field also includes South Dakota State (2008 Champion), Cincinnati (2007 champions), Youngstown State, Robert Morris, Butler, North Dakota, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Oakland University, IPFW, Malone University, King College, and the host Vikings from Cleveland State.
