Pair of 5-4 setbacks for Tornado, Lady Tornado unable to advance

MOBILE, Ala. - King College opened the 2010 NCCAA Tennis National Championship Tuesday with a narrow 5-4 defeat against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University followed by another 5-4 loss to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University. The Lady Tornado were handed a 5-0 loss against Dallas Baptist (Texas) University before a 5-1 setback against Indiana Wesleyan University.

In the Spring Arbor match, King rebounded after losing all three doubles' matches. The Tornado were able to win four of the six singles' matches before the deciding point came down to the No. 1 singles' contest. Spring Arbor, who received votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, has a 14-1 record after the match.

King, with an 11-5 record, saw a 2-1 lead after doubles go away in the Olivet Nazarene contest that resulted a 5-4 defeat.

After day one of pool play, King owns a 0-2 record while Campbellsville (Ky.) University has a 2-0 record and secured a birth into the semifinals. Olivet Nazarene and Spring Arbor both stand a 1-1. The Tornado and Campbellsville wrap up pool play with a 1 p.m. match with Campbellsville Wednesday.

The Lady Tornado were unable to advance into Wednesday's semifinals as the season comes to an end at 8-8.

King had to play the defending NCCAA Women's Tennis National Champion in Dallas Baptist who improved to 14-9 after the match. Indiana Wesleyan went to 21-1 after being ranked No. 17 in last week's NAIA Coaches' Poll.
