BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College was overtaken Wednesday by Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College 73-64 inside the Student Center.
King went to 11-10 on the season while Carson-Newman has a 17-3 record and the No. 21 ranking in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II poll.
King had a 5-2 lead early with all five points coming from Brooke Johnson (Roan Mountain, Tenn.). Carson-Newman scored the next five and did not trail the rest of the game. The freshman went on to finish with 14 points, one off her season high.
The visitors led by as many as nine, 16-7, but King answered to come within three, 22-19. After that Carson-Newman kept rolling and took a 38-24 lead to the halftime break. The lead grew to 19, 44-25, two minutes into the second half.
A late flurry brought King within five thanks to a three pointer by Derika Mooney (Athens, Tenn.) with 3:50 to go. The basket made the score 65-60, but that was as close as the game would be in the final moments.
King finished the game going 25-for-60 (41.7 percent), but Carson-Newman used 25 offensive rebounds as the team was 27-for-80 (33.8 percent). The Lady Tornado went 6-for-15 (40.0 percent) from behind the arc and Carson-Newman held the advantage at the free-throw line going 15-for-19 (78.9 percent). The home team was just 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) as three players went to the line.
Overall, Carson-Newman grabbed 50 rebounds and King gathered 44. The 25 offensive rebounds by Carson-Newman led to 29 second-chance points. King's 13 offensive rebounds were good for 11 second-chance points.
A key in the game were turnovers as King committed 25 which led to 29 Lady Eagle points.
Allison Bosse (Farragut, Tenn.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It was the third of the season for the sophomore. Beth Raby (Farragut, Tenn.) threw in 15 points.
Carson-Newman's duo of Ashley Kyle and Shari Buford had 14 points each. Buford had 10 rebounds as well. Katlin Moore and Dominique Jackson scored came of the bench to score 12 and 10, respectively.
King hosts Virginia Intermont College Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Lady Tornado started 2010 with a 78-46 win.
