William "Bill" Heizer graduated from King University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. From 1958-1959, he was a chemistry instructor at King College. Bill served as faculty at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology from 1970-2008. The responsibilities of his positions included directing a research lab, teaching third and fourth year medical students, residents, and fellows. Heizer also provided clinical care for patients in hospitals and clinics. Although he is retired from the University, he still attends conferences in the gastrointestinal division almost weekly. Bill sees this as a time to share information with younger doctors. To continue his work in medicine, he occasional aids in the medical care at a free clinic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
