BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King Student-Athlete Advisory Committee named Lorrie Ramos (women’s wrestling) and Spencer Frantom (men’s cross country) the November Student-Athletes of the Month.
Spencer Frantom helped the men’s cross country team its first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship appearance with a strong second place finish at the Southeast Regional Championship meet on Nov. 3. On that day, the Morristown, Tenn. native crossed the finish line in 31:50.6 on the 10k course in Charlotte, N.C. He led all Tornado runners that day and helped the team finish third overall, punching their ticket to nationals. On Nov. 17, Frantom eclipsed his regional time by more than a full minute and just missed out on All-American honors. The junior placed 43rd overall at the national meet, hosted by Missouri Southern State University (Joplin, Mo.). He again led all Tornado harriers while King placed 27th overall as a team in their first trip to the sports’ highest level of collegiate competition.
Lorrie Ramos began the month with a pair of wins in dual competition, first defeating Missouri Baptist’s Darcie O’Brien by decision (6-0, 5-0) and later that day pinning Lourdes Hernandez (University of the Cumberlands) in less than one minute. Her successes continued at the Missouri Valley Open (Nov. 11) when she defeated teammate Kerri Bumpers in the 170-pound championship in close three-period decision (2-3, 2-0, 1-1). The Orlando, Fla. native won three bouts leading up to the championship match, all by pin in under one minute. Her tournament championship was the first of her career. Ramos also was a part of the Lady Tornado’s third place team performance at the 2012 Harry Geris Memorial Duals, held in London, Ontario on Nov. 17. King currently ranked No. 1 by the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association.
