Solid Blue Sweeps Through Bristol Thursday

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Expect a storm of blue to rage through the Student Center Complex this Thursday when the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams host the Limestone Saints. Solid Blue is back in town for the 2012 edition of this emerging King tradition where masses of Tornado fans are treated to fun, freebies, exciting basketball and the chance to win a myriad of prizes during the doubleheader. The first of two games between the Saints and Tornado begin at 5:30 p.m.

Fans will be greeted at the Student Center with a collection of free gifts to help celebrate Solid Blue and to “Get Blue” including t-shirts, wrist bands, rally towels and crazy blue wigs to help show your school spirit. If fans come early or are looking for something to occupy their time during breaks, Cornhole will be available to play on the mezzanine of the Student Center. Fans will also be selected to participate in a variety of contests for their chance to win prizes including King Athletics gear, Walmart gift cards, and an iPod Nano.

Solid Blue is now in its fifth year of existence at King and is a fast-growing tradition that students anxiously anticipate each year during basketball season. Solid Blue began during the 2006-07 basketball season and was previously known as “KC Nights” or “Midnight Madness” to some. Originally used to reunite former King basketball players, the event evolved into a student-organized activity to bring the campus together for a night of basketball and to rally behind its teams. It soon came to be known as Solid Blue, representing one of King’s two main colors.

The annual event has become more and more spirited for the College and the Bristol community with each passing year. “I think it is a great way for the King student body, faculty and staff to come together at an athletic event and rally behind our teams and show our passion for our school,” said Emily Loudon, Director of Campus Life. “Solid Blue is a great way for an entire community to cheer on our teams while they take on a rival, show their spirit and enjoy the camaraderie.”

Lady Tornado Basketball will kick off the beginning of Solid Blue with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against the Limestone Saints. Men’s basketball will follow the Lady Tornado’s game and is set for a 7:30 p.m. The doubleheader will serve as a rematch of the Tornado’s first-ever Conference Carolinas basketball games in which the women fell to the Saints while the men earned their first conference victory in an upset of the preseason favorite Saints.
