King’s success on the softball diamond and basketball court propelled them to a 166th overall placement among the 244 NCAA Division II schools in the report. Limestone (84) and Queens (93) finished ahead of the Tornado among Conference Carolinas schools while Mount Olive (173) and Barton (175) rounded out the top five schools in the conference.

“A third place finish amongst our conference peer schools is a tremendous accomplishment in just our second year as a member of NCAA Division II,” said Director of Athletics David Hicks. “It is a testament to the institutional leadership, dedication of our entire coaching staff, and the talent and commitment of our student athletes.”

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

The Lady Tornado softball team earned the College’s first postseason championship after it swept through the Conference Carolinas Softball Tournament as the sixth seed for the title. Tornado Men’s Basketball won the school’s first-ever regular season conference championship with a 14-2 league record while finishing 23-8 overall. They also earned a bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament as an at-large. Of the teams counted in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings, all sports that King sponsors advanced to their respective postseasons. In addition the King cycling, men’s and women’s wrestling, men’s and women’s swimming, and men’s and women’s cross country teams all advanced to the postseason.
