HIGH POINT, N.C. – Pitching helped King College Baseball and Softball two wins over the course of the week and has earned two individuals this week’s Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week awards in their respective sports. Hannah Light (Softball) and Cory Rhodes (Baseball) have been named by the league office as one of seven players of the week.
Hannah Light has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week during week number nine of the 2012 season. Light has turned into King's workhorse since her return in early March. She has appeared in nine games, starting six in the past week for the Lady Tornado. Light notched six complete games and six wins while maintaining a 1.50 ERA and holding opponents to a .236 batting average. The Coeburn, Va. native tossed two complete-games, both shutouts over Pfeiffer on March 26 and Limestone on March 27. Over nine games, she has tossed an unreal 51.1 innings while holding a 29:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a WHIP under 1.00 in that time. King is 22-12 on the season, and 9-7 in conference play.
Cory Rhodes has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Baseball Pitcher of the Week during week number nine of the 2012 season. Cory Rhodes tossed his fourth complete game of the season en route to his fifth win of his sophomore campaign. Even more impressive for the lefty was the fact that he did it over the course of two days and technically, two months. After he kept the Limestone Saints scoreless through three innings of work on Saturday (March 31), striking out four in that time before rain and lightning suspended play with a 0-0 score. The native of Kissimmee, Fla., returned to the rubber on Sunday (April 1) to finish what he had started, striking out an additional six Saints over his four remaining innings to total 10 in the game. Rhodes finished strong, striking out two of the final three outs in the seventh inning in a 3-0, complete-game, shutout win. The Tornado are 21-13 overall on the season, and 10-8 in conference play.
